More and more people are choosing to train outdoors – also when on holiday – and this trend can clearly be seen at Skallerup Seaside Resort. As a result, the North Jutland holiday resort is now expanding its wide range of activities to include two new outdoor sports: guided mountain bike rides and balance-challenging surfing. The latest trend in exercise and fitness is all about moving training outdoors. An increasing number of Danes have discovered that training in the great outdoors, which combines high intensity and fresh air, provides the ultimate training experience, both physically and mentally. Of course, this also applies when on holiday. At Skallerup Seaside Resort in Lønstrup the call of nature is also being felt, with more and more guests looking to combine time spent in the water park and wellness section with a chance to exercise out in the open – preferably with someone with whom to share the experience both during and after training. The holiday resort’s more than 100 indoor and outdoor activities are thus now being augmented by challenging rides through the forest on two wheels and balance training on the North Sea waves. From Easter, Skallerup Seaside Resort will begin offering guided mountain bike rides on one of Denmark’s best mountain bike routes, as well as surfing courses that enable you to train your balance and your muscles in a fun and challenging manner. The call of nature when on holiday “The unspoilt countryside and opportunity for outdoor exercise are highlighted by many of our guests as being amongst the best things about Skallerup. This trend has become more marked during recent years; with the exception of our water park facilities, the countryside is identified by most guests as the greatest attraction,” says Head of Sales and Marketing, Mette Green Clausen, from Skallerup Seaside Resort.
The mountain bike rides run through the dune plantation at Tornby Klitplantage close to the resort centre, where experienced mountain bike riders lead the way on either relaxing family trips or more challenging routes for more experienced riders. In Løkken, which lies just north of Skallerup, the water is particularly well-suited to surfing, and it’s here that the holiday resort’s surfing courses are held. Both activities will take place one or two times a week.
“Mountain bike rides and surfing combine exercise with fun in the countryside, which make them ideal as part of our activity programme. In the years ahead, we’ll be applying even more focus to the fact that we’re located in fantastic countryside, and these two activities thus represent the start of our plan to continue to increase the number of activities in the great outdoors,” explains Mette Green Clausen. Outdoor exercise for all At the beginning of 2017, Skallerup Seaside Resort received a Travellers Choice award in the “Best service in Denmark” category from the world’s biggest travel site, TripAdvisor, for the third year running. With these new activities, Skallerup Seaside Resort is strengthening its position as a holiday destination offering activities that are open to all. “We’ve always taken pride in our ability to listen to the wishes of our guests, and we believe that this is one of the reasons why our high level of service has now been recognised for the third time. As with all our other activities, mountain biking and surfing have been carefully chosen on the basis of input from our wide diversity of guests, who’ve all expressed their enthusiasm for our unique North Sea scenery and outdoor exercise. We’re therefore very much looking forward to being able to offer these two particular activities, which families with children, couples and colleagues can all enjoy,” says Mette Green Clausen.
Earlier this year, Skallerup Seaside Resort opened a brand new fitness centre, thus also enhancing the facilities for indoor training. Fitness classes include Pilates, yoga and CrossFit.
“And of course there’s a great view of the sea from the fitness centre,” adds Mette Green Clausen with a smile.
